Pediatric Orthopaedics
The growing skeleton presents a unique situation that must
be dealt with appropriately when injured to avoid unwanted
complications with growth and development. Neuromuscular
conditions such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida are frequently
associated with joint contractures, joint dislocations,
foot deformities, scoliosis, and walking difficulties in
children. Pediatric orthopaedic treatment may correct these
problems with the possibility of significant improvement
in patient independence and quality of life. Genetic conditions
such as Down’s syndrome and Marfan’s syndrome
are frequently associated with musculoskeletal problems
that can be successfully treated with pediatric orthopaedic
intervention. New minimally invasive procedures are now
available as part of the pediatric orthopaedic armamentarium
in the treatment of spinal deformities such as scoliosis.
